Gas-Phase Proportional Counting: A Radiotracer Technique for Examination of Electronic Components and Materials
SourceGas-phase proportional counting, a new radiotracer technique for analysis of gaseous products, has many practical applications in the evaluation of electronic devices and materials. Gas evolution from materials in vacuum tubes can be easily studied, different sources of the same gas can be determined, and traces of organic substances can be detected by converting organics to radioactive gas. This paper discusses the application of this technique to two specific problems: the identification of the source of carbonaceous gases evolved from cathode nickel, and the efficiency of solder flux removal during the manufacture of modular electrical components.
