Control of processing environments has always been a major factor in the manufacture of electronic devices. However, the control of environments did not involve important capital outlay until after World War II. At that time, military and industrial demands for improved performance and greater reliability necessitated the development of special equipment for environmental control in the manufacture of ball bearings, gyroscopes, and electronic devices.
