Revision of D2265-22 Standard Test Method for Dropping Point of Lubricating Grease Over Wide Temperature Range
Rationale
This work item proposes a revision to Figure 1A (Grease Cup) in ASTM D2265 to correct a geometric inconsistency identified in the current published dimensions. During a dimensional verification review, it was determined that the specified radius (R 4.65 -0.05) does not mathematically reconcile with the associated vertical and base dimensions, resulting in an internal dimensional conflict.
The calculated geometry aligns with the tolerance range shown in the earlier D2265-06 version but falls outside the tightened tolerance in the current edition. To eliminate ambiguity and ensure dimensional consistency, it is proposed to revise the ASTM drawing to align with the geometrically consistent configuration shown in ISO 2176.
This revision corrects a drafting inconsistency only and does not alter test principle, apparatus function, or precision and bias.
