1. Scope
1.1 This practice covers the in-situ measurement of lubricant film thickness in lubricated machine elements using ultrasonic reflection.
1.2 Primary Applications: This practice is primarily intended for measuring continuous fluid films in components such as fluid film bearings, mechanical seals, and linear guides.
1.3 Secondary Applications: This practice applies to rolling element bearings (e.g., cylindrical roller types).
1.4 This practice excludes complex geometries such as gear teeth meshes, where perpendicular sensor orientation cannot be maintained.
