New Test Method for Determination of Electrical Resistivity of Coarse Grained Materials in the Laboratory

1. Scope

This test method provides equipment and procedures for measuring electrical resistivity coarse grained materials in the laboratory.

Keywords

electrical resistivity; resistivity, resistivity test box, box factor, coarse grained material

Rationale

This test method offers a standardized method of measuring the electrical resistivity of soil and/or construction material consisting primarily of or containing coarse grained particles larger than 2 mm (#10 sieve) and up to 3 inches. This test method includes considerations for apparatus used for testing, monitoring physical properties of the materials being tested, as well as documenting the test conditions of the material that may impact the measured resistivity.

There is currently not a standard method of test in ASTM International that includes a standard method for measuring the resistivity of material comprised primarily of coarse grained particles larger than 2 mm. ASTM G57 and G187 offer suitable methods for measuring the resistivity of soils with particle sizes smaller than 2 mm. This test method would be beneficial to engineers and designers when specifying the electrical resistivity of a variety of soils and construction materials that are not specifically addressed in current test methods.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
