New Specification for Rotors and Rotor Systems for Light Sport Helicopters

1. Scope

This document defines the performance, safety, and marking requirements for main and tail rotor systems, including rotor speed limits, drive system design, warning systems, operational limitations, and documentation requirements.

Keywords

light sport aircraft; lsa; rotors; light sport helicopter

Rationale

Rotors that provide the principle lift for vertical lift aircraft have an airfoil profile and individual blade control to enable both collective pitch changes as well as roll or pitch changes of the aircraft using a cyclic control. The nature of these airfoils as principle lift components and their need for dynamic control to enable all principles of vertical flight using rotors requires specific considerations to assure controllability and safety.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
