Revision of E2905/E2905M-20 Standard Practice for Examination of Mill and Kiln Girth Gear Teeth—Electromagnetic Methods

Rationale

Revisions were made as part of the 5 year review process. Major revisions were made: (1) to clarify the scope of the practice as applying specifically to Eddy Current Array (ECA) examination of mill and kiln girth gear and pinion teeth and refine terminology related to lift-off, surface condition, and repeatability; (2) to the Summary of Practice, Significance and Use, and procedural sections to emphasize performance-based requirements for valid and repeatable ECA examinations while avoiding prescriptive operational detail; (3) for the cleaning requirements and known limitations associated with surface condition, particularly in the root region, to prevent misinterpretation of results; (4) to the language related to electromagnetic characterization and supplementary methods to align with the intended scope of the practice, including removal of nonmandatory appendices containing operational cleaning procedures; (5) clarification of what is required for a valid and repeatable ECA examination without prescribing how practitioners must perform their work. Minor revisions were also made to be consistent with Policy P-10.
