New Test Method for Determination of Floor Flatness by Comprehensive Slab Survey
1. Scope
This test method describes the data collection and analysis procedures to determine surface flatness by dense, square grid elevation survey and evaluating levelness, and flatness extrapolated from triangular data to align with straightedge testing.
Keywords
Elevation grid; elevation survey; straightedge; heat map; elevation deviation; contour plots
Rationale
• Complete Surface Coverage and Issue Detection. A full grid ensures localized deformations are not missed, overcoming a known limitation of line-based sampling [6][9] and straightedge testing (note: it is not practical to perform straightedge testing for areas much larger than 2000 square feet, without physical stress on the body, and hence missed or improper assessment.).
• Alignment with Floor Finish Requirements (Division 09). S³ evaluates directly against straightedge tolerances, the language of Division 09 installers and manufacturers [4][7].
• Early Problem Identification = Cost & Time Savings. Using S³ early allows economical correction and avoids the high costs of late discovery; industry case studies show substantial savings and ROI for proactive testing [9][14].
• Quantitative Guidance for Remediation. Unlike F-number reports, S³ SHAW SLAB SURVEY produces actionable heatmaps and material estimates, reducing waste and preventing overcorrection [7] which is commonly seen on projects. It also directly indicates precise locations for grinding to reduce quantities to meet tolerance specified by the manufacturer, owner or General Contractor.
• The S³ SHAW SLAB SURVEY can also adjust for sloped floors with the right equipment.
• Enhanced Accountability and Collaboration. As a neutral survey, S³ SHAW SLAB SURVEY supports fair allocation of responsibilities and reduces disputes between Division 03 and Division 09 stakeholders [7][11].
• Leverages Modern Technology. Advances in scanning enable rapid, comprehensive mapping that standards can now embrace [6][13].
• Anytime Testing: S³ can be performed within 24-72 hours from pour/placement of the slab or any date thereafter for the life of the slab.
• Levelness and flatness Surveys: S³ provides a more compressive levelness and flatness survey at the same time of testing.
• Multiple Grid Options: S³ has grid options of any desired size (e.g., 1 ft (305 mm), 2 ft, 3 ft, etc.)
• Testing Other Concrete Floor Shapes: S³ has the ability to measure camber before and its slope change after live (variable) and dead (fixed) loads are applied
