New Test Method for Determining the Bending Strength of Industrial Hemp Hurd

1. Scope

This test method characterizes the mechanical properties of industrial hemp hurd particles using a three-point bending apparatus, which applies a centered force along the particle’s longitudinal axis to quantify flexural properties such as strength, rupture point, and strain at break.

Keywords

Industrial hemp hurd, fiber hurd, grain hurd, fiber/grain hurd, bending strength for hurd, bend strength apparatus, hemp-lime, retted hemp

Rationale

Establishing a way to measure and analyze the mechanical properties of hurd will enable the development of a test standard for determining hurd quality. This standard will ensure that any hemp-lime insulation matrix can be optimized for mechanical strength, thermal performance, hygrothermal behavior, and long-term durability. Moreover, scientific validation of this testing methodology will facilitate adoption into the building codes, strengthening construction quality and accelerating widespread adoption of this material, which can save energy, protect lives and property, and safeguard the economic vitality of communities.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
