New Practice for the design and manufacture of turbine engines for the Light Sport Aircraft

1. Scope

The new MOSAICrules will now allow the use of turbine engines for Light Sport Aircraft. To date, there are no standards for the design and manufacture of turbine engines for Light Sport Aircraft. The purpose of this document is to propose a new standard to address this issue. This proposed standard is based on specifications and means of compliance already used in the aviation industry, whether in the European light sport aircraft sector or in American or European certified general aviation (cf. below references). This proposal has also been developed to ensure consistency in terms of specifications and safety requirements with other existing propulsion system alternatives such as reciprocating spark/compression ignition engines or electric engines in the framework of MOSAIC (cf. below references). In addition, this standard would cover the complete scope of the turbine engines use in the framework of MOSAIC. This means that a turbine engine can be used as the primary source of the propulsion system, either as a turboprop, turboshaft, turbofan or turbojet engine, or as a turbogenerator in a hybrid electric architecture, to provide electricity.
