Revision of E2520-21 Standard Practice for Measuring and Scoring Performance of Trace Explosive Chemical Detectors

Rationale

Standard Practice E2520 provides a comprehensive test of instrumentation used in the field for the detection of trace explosives, and is used for the pre-qualification of new instrumentation considered for deployment by international agencies responsible for protecting the public and infrastructure. This revision will add four priority explosive threats to the list of compounds considered. The international community is interested in expanding the scope of this Standard Practice to instrumentation that detect fentanyl and its analogues, so we will consider this given that a series of other ASTM standards (Guide E3289, Specification E3243 and Test Method E3290) addressing the detection of fentanyl were promulgated in 2021.
