New Test Method for Footfall Vibration Testing on Building Floors

1. Scope

Develop a standard procedure on how to perform footfall vibration testing on building floors, including data collection, analysis, and presentation of results.

Keywords

floor vibration; accelerometer

Rationale

Noise and vibration consultants, as well as structural engineers in the building construction industry, are often required to evaluate the floor vibration performance of existing buildings. A common approach is to measure floor vibrations induced by walking and assess whether the floor is suitable for its intended use (e.g., residential, office, research laboratory). Currently, there is no published standard for conducting footfall vibration testing in buildings, other than generic guidelines. As a result, consultants rely on their own methods for testing, data analysis, and reporting of results.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
