Revision of D2240-15(2021) Standard Test Method for Rubber Property—Durometer Hardness

Rationale

9.2 Manual (Hand Held) Operation of Durometer: The existing procedure does not adequately define the perpendicularity requirement for durometer placement during testing. Enhanced specifications are needed to require that the durometer be positioned perpendicular (90° ± X°) to the test surface, as deviation from this orientation can significantly affect hardness readings and lead to inconsistent results between operators and laboratories. The revision should also address the need for durometers to include a mechanical mechanism that physically secures perpendicular placement to the test surface before and during measurement, ensuring readings are not taken during transient alignment or operator hand movement.
