Revision of A556/A556M-18 Standard Specification for Seamless Cold-Drawn Carbon Steel Feedwater Heater Tubes
Rationale
On ballot A01 (25-04), Item 11 proposed extensive revisions (near complete rewrite) to the supplementary requirements sections of A556. The balloted language in the last sentence of Sections S1.1, S3.1, and S4.1 states: “It is the intent of these inspections to reject tubes with discontinuities that produce test signals equal to or greater than that of the calibration notches.”
The ballot item passed but a member offered a very valid comment: “What is the contractual status of an intent statement?” She suggested the sections be revised and placed in shall terms. What I have offered would change S1.1, S3.1, and S4.1 to read: “Tubes with discontinuities that produce test signals equal to or greater than that of the calibration notches shall be rejected.”
