New Guide for Robotics, Automation, and Autonomous Systems -- General Principles -- Development and Roadmapping of Robotics Safety in Additive Construction

1. Scope

This guide roadmap will:
1. Identify safety considerations related to extrusion based Additive Construction technologies and define a path forward for standard development.
2. Identify occupational health and safety aspects for human interaction with Additive Construction technologies.
3. Highlight risk mitigation enabled by Additive Construction technologies, as well as the new risks associated with their adoption.
4. Provide methods for risk assessment and control measurement when interacting with Additive Construction technology agents.
5. Provide definition to different levels of human robot interaction, automation, and roles in Additive Construction.

Rationale

Establish consensus on the occupational health and safety (OHS) considerations when humans interact with Additive Construction technologies and develop a roadmap for related standard development efforts. At present, no consensus-based OHS guidelines exist for Additive Construction. This guide introduces definitions for hazard identification and risk assessment in the context of interactions with the various agents (robot manipulator, material delivery system, end-effector, materials, work environment) that make up an Additive Construction system. It also defines the different levels of human–robot interaction, the levels of automation within 3D printing systems, and the roles of personnel commonly involved in additive construction environments. These definitions are intended to provide construction project stakeholders with guidance to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures. In addition, the guide describes both the risks that can be mitigated through the use of Additive Construction technologies and the novel risks that are introduced by their adoption. By clarifying the roles of personnel and the levels of interaction with Additive Construction systems, the resulting roadmap will identify the standards that are further required to support practitioners in assessing risks more effectively and implementing suitable safety measures across different tasks and contexts.
