Revision of D5969-21 Standard Test Method for Corrosion-Preventive Properties of Lubricating Greases in Presence of Dilute Synthetic Sea Water Environments

Rationale

Over the last few years, issues have been brought to the subcommittee about quality issues with the Timken test bearings specified in the method. Investigation revealed poor application of rust preventative on certain lots of new bearings may be making the test fail on samples that should typically pass the test. Alternative bearing suppliers were reviewed and showed better rust preventative application. A limited ILS was completed showing equivalent performance between Timken and NTN test bearings. While a full ILS is organized, ballot the removal of sole source note for the test bearings being supplied by Timken. Improve description of the test bearing to be used, note in the precision statement that only Timken bearings were used along with the date of the ILS. Note that Timken has changed processing of the bearings from that time and include mini-ILS data from Timken vs. NTN bearing testing.
