Revision of F1839-08(2021) Standard Specification for Rigid Polyurethane Foam for Use as a Standard Material for Testing Orthopaedic Devices and Instruments
Rationale
The August ballot for this standards’ 5-year review yielded a negative vote with comments which were discussed at the subcommittee meeting in November 2025. As a result, several revisions were proposed and agreed upon at the meeting which include.
- Changes to void criteria in Table 1 to reduce acceptable size and occurrence of voids.
- Inclusion of a dimensional tolerance for test specimen sizes
- Update existing environmental conditions to align with D618 standard practice for conditioning plastics for testing and addition of standard environmental conditions to the screw pullout test.
- Clarification to storage responsibility requirements to avoid duplicated screw pullout testing by specifying 10.2.2 physical requirements for foam that previously met 10.2 acceptance criteria for both suppliers and users.
- Removal of last sentence in X1.2 because it is not relevant to rationale.
- Addition of X1.8 to provide background on dimensional stability test method.
