New Practice for Measurement of Residual Magnetics Using Gaussmeters and Magnetometers.

1. Scope

This practice addresses the measurement of residual magnetism near the surface of ferro- and ferri-magnetic line pipe, casing and tubing.

Keywords

residual magnetism; line pipe magnetism; pipeline magnetism; gaussmeter; magnetometer; magnetic testing

Rationale

Steel and other ferromagnetic materials are used to manufacture line pipe for pipeline applications. Too much residual magnetism causes unwanted ferromagnetic particles to adhere to the ends of the pipe segments which interferes with the smooth connection of pipe segments and can result in difficulty connecting pipe segments or leakage at the joint. Techniques are used to demagnetize segments prior to shipment, but residual magnetism can build up during transport and handling. This practice explains the nature of the magnetic problem and details types of measuring equipment suitable to quantifying residual magnetism and how to use that equipment properly.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
