Rationale:
The task group recommends modifying ASTM C497 Standard Test Methods for Concrete Pipe, Concrete Box Sections, Manhole Sections, or Tile Sections 18.3.3 and 18.3.4 to allow for other types of pipe to be used for inlet and outlet plumbing when performing the external joint test. Other common and readily available pipe types can be safely and effectively utilized while performing this test
In practice, other types of pipe can be utilized for this and have been found easier to remove, allowing for the bell to be repaired for potential pipe use.
