New Specification for OXYGEN SYSTEMS

1. Scope

This specification defines the requirement for installing oxygen systems in light sport aircraft.

Keywords

altitude; cannula; mask; flow; LPM

Rationale

Oxygen systems need to be installed in a safe manner and should support cognitive functioning of the pilot with operations that are monitorable and verifiable.

While there are no specific oxygen system standards in the current light sport standards, there are minimum standards that can be adopted at least in part from the existing Part 23 rules.

§ 23.1441
Oxygen equipment and supply
§ 23.1443
Minimum mass flow of supplemental oxygen
§ 23.1445
Oxygen distribution system
§ 23.1447
Equipment standards for oxygen dispensing units
§ 23.1449
Means for determining use of oxygen
§ 23.1450
Chemical oxygen generators
§ 23.1451
Fire protection for oxygen equipment
§ 23.1453
Protection of oxygen pressure lines

Note that this is a ballot intended to get the committee to a baseline, published standard that is usable to Part 22 compliance. There will be ample opportunity to further develop this standard for unique technologies or special aircraft types. We encourage you to submit comments that will help us further content development/refinement after the baseline standard has been approved.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
