New Test Method for Detection of Hydraulic Oil and Polyalphaolefin (PAO) based coolants in jet fuel using Raman spectroscopy
1. Scope
Aviation turbine fuels
Keywords
Raman; Portable Spectrometer
Rationale
Hydraulic oil and coolant lines often run through the fuel tanks of aircraft and it is near impossible to detect a leak without specialized testing. Currently the only testing that exists for this is GCMS which can be costly and time consuming based on how far away a capable laboratory is. When there is a suspected leak, the aircraft is grounded until the contamination can be confirmed or remediated and this can be very costly to both commercial and military aviation operations. A portable spectrometer capable of detecting hydraulic oils and coolants that have leaked into jet fuels would greatly benefit the commercial and military aviation communities.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
