New Practice for Dimensional Measurement In-Field of Resilient Floor Tiles and Planks using Precision Measuring Instruments
1. Scope
This practice will establish procedures for the in-field measurement of the physical dimensions of resilient floor tiles and planks, including length and width, using high-accuracy calipers. It will provide a standardized methodology for measuring both uninstalled material (out-of-the-box) and installed flooring units.
This practice is intended to determine if the material conforms to specified dimensional tolerances and to provide objective data for evaluating field performance issues such as dimensional changes post-installation.

Rationale
Dimensional inconsistencies are a primary driver of claims and failures in the resilient flooring industry, yet measurement methods in the field are currently non-standardized and often rely on imprecise tools. By utilizing high-accuracy calipers, this Work Item provides a rigorous, repeatable protocol for inspectors, manufacturers, and contractors to verify product dimensions on-site.
Standardizing these measurements allows stakeholders to distinguish between manufacturing deviations and installation or environmental factors (such as thermal expansion or substrate movement). This objective data collection is essential for resolving technical disputes, improving quality control, and ensuring the long-term performance of resilient flooring systems.
Users of the standard will likely be flooring manufacturers, flooring inspectors and consultants, contractors, and building owners and management.
