New Specification for Optical Performance Requirements of Football Helmet Eyeshield Visors
1. Scope
This specification covers polymer type eye protectors designed to attach to, and compliment the protection provided by
football helmet faceguards. Eyeshield visors provide additional protection to the eye and adnexa from to impact on the field of play from objects which may penetrate the openings of the grid of the helmet faceguard. The specification sets minimum performance requirements for optical performance such that the visor will not denigrate player visual acuity and performance as subject to player vision.
Keywords
sports safety; football visor; eyeshield; football helmet faceguard
Rationale
To date, a standard does not exist setting minimal optical acuity requirements--which is a detriment
to those players who wear and rely on visors for protection of their eye’s and surrounding andexa.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
