Correlation of Helium Bubble Microstructure to Changes of the Mechanical Properties in Austenitic Stainless Steels
SourceThe high-temperature creep properties of solution-annealed and aged AISI Type 316 stainless steel were investigated, using different helium implantation and creep testing procedures. The helium bubble microstructure was determined in detail at different stages of the test procedures. Mechanical properties changes and microstructure were correlated and both were compared to existing models for high-temperature embrittlement. This comparison suggests that the experimental results are described best by the “gas-driven bubble growth” model for the cases of either continuous helium supply at high temperatures, that is “in-beam” creep test, or implantation at high temperatures without applied stress.
