Characterization of the Mechanical Properties of a Unidirectional Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Matrix Composite

An exploratory characterization program was conducted on one high-modulus unidirectional composite, carbon fiber reinforced epoxy. Existing test methods were used with minimum modification except in the cases of dynamic moduli and flexural fatigue strength where new methods were developed. The test methods were generally satisfactory. Two notable exceptions were the short-beam shear test for determining interlaminar shear strength and the flat plate test for static shear modulus.
