Composite Materials' Testing
This paper will discuss some of the tests now being used in composites testing. The problems of testing, getting the information sought after, the pitfalls, and some of the controversy surrounding testing will be presented in detail. The added difficulty of testing brought about by the use of high-modulus (advanced) fibers is composites will be discussed thoroughly. For instance, the shear strength test for composite materials has become an extremely controversial subject now that we are dealing with high-modulus fibers. We thought we understood shear testing when we tested glass filament reinforced plastics—at least we all understood one another—now we do not understand shear in this complex advanced composites field.
