Tensile and Impact Properties of Cast Stainless Steels at Cryogenic Temperatures
Tensile and notched-bar impact tests were performed on production heats of seven grades of cast chromium-nickel stainless steels at temperatures from 70 F to −430 F. No ductile-brittle transition was observed for any of the alloys including those having a small amount of delta ferrite dispersed in the microstructure. Retention of toughness at low temperature was dependent upon an austenitic structure and low interstitial (carbon + nitrogen) content.
