Surface-Damage Threshold Measurements for Several Laser Glasses

The surface-damage threshold of several laser glasses has been determined for the traveling wave case. (The condition of the surface was found to be the most significant factor in determining the value of the threshold.) Chemical etching of the surfaces was found to increase the threshold value by a factor of 2. The combination of surface polishing with barnsite plus on-pitch and chemical etching increased the threshold value by a factor of 10.
