Applications of Electron Spin Resonance to Study of Damage in Glass Lasers
SourceElectron spin resonance measurements of rare earth doped glass laser materials may serve as an attractive means of examining the environment of the lasing ion. The important (Nd+3, Ho+3, Er+3, and Yb+3) ions have paramagnetic ground states allowing for detailed studies of the site symmetry via the ESR technique. In addition, there may exist other dopants in glass rods (F centers caused by the ultraviolet radiation of the flashlamp or free radicals associated with surface finishing) whose presence may be revealed with ESR measurements. For this latter application laser rods could be examined non-destructively.
