Fracture Toughness Testing
SourceFracture toughness testing is a new approach to measuring the specific conditions under which low-ductility fracture will take place as a result of a crack developing in an elastic stress field. It appears to be independent of the type of crack growth. The development of fracture-toughness test procedures is reviewed, and the areas of current interest are identified. Implications to the materials engineer and designer are suggested.
