Microconstituents in High-Speed Steel

Electron microprobe analysis can be applied to the study of microconstituents in high-speed steel. In situ analyses were made in alloy carbides and manganese sulfide inclusions. Apparent heterogeneity is shown in the iron and vanadium contents of three neighboring M₆C carbides, and the fact that VC carbides contain considerable amounts of alloying elements other than vanadium is illustrated. In a massive VC carbide no significant composition changes were observed in its center after tempering, and annealing heat treatments were conducted in vacuum.
