SourceThe broad categories listed in Table I represent an attempt to classify the case histories according to the basic industries in which stress-corrosion cracking was thought to be most frequently associated. All case histories were used with the exception of Nos. 27, 28, and 72. Cases Nos. 27 and 28 were instances of cracking occurring as a result of molten metal attack, and No. 72 described a case in which cracking was expected but did not occur. Unfortunately, much of the data contained insufficient detail to classify the cases accurately other than under a “miscellaneous and unknown” heading. Cases which included heat exchangers or condensers, sterilizers, etc., which cracked on the water or steam side, but were not clearly associated with any particular industry, were included with the “heat generation” group.
