Settlement of a Railroad Embankment Crossing the Morganza Floodway, Louisiana
SourcePredicted and actual settlements are compared for a large earth embankment resting on a compressible clay foundation. Soil conditions in the foundation are discussed and results of consolidation tests on undisturbed specimens of foundation soil are presented. The settlement analyses and comparisons indicate that computed settlements appear to be reasonable based on actual observed settlements. However, the rate of settlement in the prototype is somewhat faster than that predicted by theoretical time-rate studies.
