Introduction

Source

This introduction presents a discussion of definitions and nomenclature. It is followed by the results of the survey on available standard samples. The survey material is divided into sections representing related groups of materials for which extensive applications of spectrographic analysis have been made. In certain of these groups, for example aluminum alloys, satisfactory series of standard samples have been developed, while in other fields standard samples are either lacking entirely or are not obtainable in sufficient quantity. In this report the status of standards in each group of materials is discussed and those available are listed with data on the forms of the samples, the intended uses and typical compositions. The first five sections covering available standard samples comprise the metals, as follows: Iron and Steel Aluminum and Its Alloys Magnesium and Its Alloys Zinc, Lead, and Tin Alloys Copper Alloys In the sixth section, entitled “Miscellaneous Materials,” a variety of samples is listed. The samples include ceramic materials, steel-making alloys, ores, refractories, and synthesized mixtures, salts, and solutions. At the end of this section are listed some sources of rare chemicals, powdered metals, and pure metals useful in preparing spectrographic standard samples.
