Residual Stresses in Cast Iron Deaerating Trays

This paper presents the results of an investigation conducted to determine the magnitude of residual stresses in sand-cast austenitic alloy cast iron deaerating feed-water heater trays. Tensile stresses very closely approaching the tensile strength of the material were found in certain areas of the castings. As a result, subsequent production parts have been given a stress-relief heat treatment intended to reduce residual stresses and eliminate field difficulties.
