Introduction

In response to a request that Committee D-11 on Rubber and Rubber-Like Materials sponsor a symposium at this Annual Meeting, a committee was organized, fully realizing that it would mean considerable work on the part of many D-11 members, to formulate plans. As this plan progressed, it was appreciated that it would be impossible at any one-day symposium to cover all the subjects that might be desirable. We also recognized that while some work had already been published, there was a considerable amount of it unpublished and if this could be made available, it would be well worth while. Some of the work that was published appeared in The India Rubber World and The Rubber Age. One special group of papers were those by T. A. Werkenthin and his associates at the Bureau of Ships, entitled, “The Development in the Field of Testing Procedures for Evaluation of Natural and Synthetic Rubbers and Plastic Lastimers.” The committee decided that the present Symposium should attempt to cover the work that had been done with regard to the physical and chemical methods of test, both on synthetic and natural rubbers, making available to industry the accomplishments of Government and industry during the period of war, when secrecy had to be maintained. The papers of this Symposium stress the importance of standardization in the rubber industry, the work of the Rubber Reserve, and the work of private industry in cooperation with Government Laboratories. This information should enable A.S.T.M. and industry to aid very materially in the attempt to standardize methods of testing.
