Use of Direct Shear Tests in Highway Design

The direct shear test has many applications in highway design. While for some purposes the triaxial test may be preferred, the direct shear test is more convenient, especially where completely consolidated tests are required. Shear test results are presented for various materials and the effect of various procedures is discussed. The application of direct shear test results to analysis of stability is outlined for swelling cuts or fills and for consolidating foundations.
