The purpose of this paper is to give a general idea of the gear lubricants used in a steel plant. A list of lubricants and viscosities used in three different plants will be shown. As they have all been used for many years, with a few exceptions, it can be assumed that they are all satisfactory. It is our belief, however, that a wider tolerance in viscosities would give equal satisfaction. This is borne out by a study of the data presented below showing gear lubricants used in these plants.
