Nonmetallic Materials for High-Temperature Structural Applications
SourceThe urgent need for high-temperature aerospace materials is spurring the development of the refractory nonmetallic materials, including the carbides, graphites, oxides, borides, and beryllides. The materials are discussed with emphasis on high-temperature structural applications. A detailed compilation of property data is presented, aerospace applications described, limitations of the materials reviewed, and promising areas of research outlined. These include the prestressing of oxides for rocket nozzle inserts and the carbide-graphite eutectics for improved thermal shock resistance.
