This brief discussion presents an economical and convenient procedure for stabilizing supersaturation in dilute solutions of calcium salts. Its pertinence to this symposium resides in the means it offers for preventing after-precipitation of calcium carbonate, which so often is a deterrent to or a perennial source of trouble in the use of lime in water treatment. The procedure is termed threshold treatment, because it does not involve, even distantly, any stoichiometric, relationships. Simple of application, its uses are manifold. A few of these will be described.
