At the very start, I wish to acknowledge with appreciation the work of the authors—all of them busy men—in the preparation of the various papers, representing as they do outstanding contributions to this Symposium on Lime. Thanks are also due to the headquarters staff for helpful assistance. Without the cooperation of these various individuals, this symposium would not have been possible. Appreciation is also recorded of the work of Mr. J. C. Pearson of the Society's Committee on Papers and Publications in the examination of manuscripts; and of the assistance of Dr. James O.
