The Influence of Intermolecular Interactions on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Chemical Shift Measurements as Related to Certain High Molecular Weight Hydrocarbon Systems
SourceNuclear magnetic resonance high resolution measurements of certain light hydrocarbon systems are described which illustrate the dependence of chemical shift on intermolecular interactions. Investigations of interaction phenomena are extended to a quantitative study of pure hydrocarbons in the petroleum oil range. Concentration dependent chemical shift deviation values as large as 27 sec−1 at a Larmor frequency of 40 Mc per sec are observed in n-hexadecane-diphenylmethane mixtures. The implication of these concentration dependent shifts on structural characterization of petroleum oils by reference standards is discussed.
