Selection of Materials for Architectural Sandwich Panels

Source

Much of the work of ASTM Committee C-19 on structural sandwich constructions in the past has been devoted to the development of standard test methods for aircraft structural sandwiches. Architectural sandwiches are potentially a greater field than aircraft sandwiches, when one considers the square footage of sandwich material in a single large building. Standardization has been slower because of the greater variety of types of structures and materials and because only moderate strength is required in the present non-load-bearing applications. It is essential that the industry set adequate methods of controlling quality, as progress can be drastically retarded by the failure of a few poor quality panels. Within the past few years, increasing numbers of architects are specifying sandwich panels for curtain walls in offices, schools, and many types of commercial buildings. If this trend continues, as we think it will, the demand in the future will be tremendous.
