Evaluation of Testing Methods for Supplementary Coatings

The purpose of this paper is to report progress in the development of improved specification tests for the evaluation of supplementary coatings and to discuss the results to date on the preliminary tests of such coatings exposed to several different environments. The coatings under investigation by Subcommittee V are phosphate coatings on electroplated zinc, chromate coatings on electroplated cadmium, and chromate coatings on electroplated zinc. It is expected that these investigations will result in the development of evaluation tests that will more accurately forecast service life than the currently used salt spray test.
