Introduction
SourceIn recent years a variety of events and causes has aroused a concern on the part of engineers over the changes in the physical and mechanical properties of materials which may be expected when they are called upon to operate at extremely low temperatures. During the recent war, our outposts in Alaska made observations on the performance of their equipment at low temperatures. More recently, “Operation Frostbite” was reported in the daily press, and served to dramatize and create interest in this problem. Modern chemical processes seem to be increasingly demanding of equipment at low temperatures.
