The primary purpose of this paper is to review and discuss some of the factors involved in the practical application of stereoscopic aerial photographic interpretation to the exploration of relatively shallow subsurface soil, soil-rock, or rock conditions on a reconnaissance level. In view of the broad and complex nature of this field of pre-engineering investigation and the abundance of published information on both general and specific aspects of this subject, it was decided to confine the discussion to some basic principles involved in analyzing and interpreting vertical aerial photography.
