3-2 Cold Welding in Copper in an Ultra-High Vacuum
SourceThe cohesion of previously fractured polycrystalline copper specimens was determined as a function of purity (99.999 per cent copper, OFHC and tough pitch), grain size (6 microns to 100 microns), compression stress during cold welding (zero up to the stress at which fracture initially occurred in the virgin specimen), time of contact during welding (5 sec to 900 sec) and exposure to the ultra-high vacuum* previous to cold welding (pt = 10−9 to 10−4 torr-sec).
