These comments address the problems of testing for the potential failure modes of coldwelding. Increasingly complex mission requirements for space systems impose additional impetus to the understanding of materials behavior in relation to environmental influences since this concerns a great number of mechanical functions. These functions require some form of loadbearing contact, separation or translation between the faying surfaces.
