This paper presents comparative scales for the selection of metals based on the ASME cavitation erosion test and the Stauffer sand erosion test, in which hard chromium electroplated on cast steel has been designated with a relative weight loss of 1 in both scales. Typical examples of cavitation erosion are discussed; commercial additives for diesel cooling water are evaluated; the effect of water or fuel oil contaminating diesel lubricating oil is indicated; welded overlays are suggested for repairing cast steel water turbines; and hardened tool steels are suggested as effective for sharp-edged sealing ports in aircraft hydraulic pumps.
