The Synthetic Mica Gage
SourceThe synthetic mica gage was developed under the sponsorship of the Wright Air Development Center of the United States Air Force. The synthetic mica gage employs a Nichrome V foil of the HFN-3 type manufactured by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corp. This foil is sandwiched between two thin sheets of synthetic mica that has been previously sintered at 2400 F. With the foil held between the two sheets of synthetic mica, the sandwich is raised to a temperature of 2200 F at 1000 psi. At this temperature the Nichrome V and the mica papers fuse together making an integral gage.
